Author Visits

Ellen Potter offers captivating presentations for grades 4 to 8. Keeping things fun yet informative, Ms. Potter gives students the inside scoop on what it’s like to be a writer. Using visual aids, like a huge “writer’s toolbox” and rough drafts with editorial comments, Potter explains the process of how story ideas develop into a finished book. She also discusses why she decided to become a writer and how students can write more interesting stories and create strong, memorable characters. She finishes her presentation with a Q & A session.

Ms. Potter is the author of the award-winning young adult Olivia Kidney series, as well as the young adult novel, Pish-Posh. Olivia Kidney (Philomel Books, 2003) was awarded Child magazine’s 2003 “Best Children’s Book Award” and selected as one of the “Books of the Year” by Parenting magazine. Additionally, it was one of the 2003 top-ten children’s books by the BookSense 76 list. Most recently, it was a finalist in The Ottakar’s Children’s Book Prize in the United Kingdom.

Olivia Kidney and the Exit Academy (Philomel Books, April 2005) was recently selected for the Booksense 76 list. According to a review in Booklist, the sequel’s “Sparkling writing, madcap characters, and serious themes contribute to a read-aloud that adults will enjoy as much as the children.”

"Ms. Potter delivered a highly interesting presentation that was geared specifically to student interests and in coordination with the writing topics teachers were covering in their classes. Students especially enjoyed the question and answer segment of her presentation, in which she made herself and her writing process very accessible and relevant to students. She was engaged with the students, positive and enthusiastic in her approach, and very flexible in her willingness to accommodate the scheduling quirks of our school. Ms. Potter's presentation was unquestionably a highly valuable addition to our school year."
